WHEN LOVE AND LEADERSHIP FEEL ONE-SIDED

When Love and Leadership Feel One-Sided: Lessons on Reciprocity

There’s a certain kind of pain that comes from giving your best, your time, energy, loyalty, and love only to realize it isn’t being reciprocated. It’s a feeling that transcends relationships; it’s something we experience in friendships, workplaces, partnerships, and even leadership roles.

As women, professionals, and leaders, we’re often taught to keep giving to stay strong, to nurture, to serve. But what happens when that giving becomes draining? When you find yourself constantly pouring into spaces and people who never pour back?

Being in a one-sided relationship whether romantic or professional can break your spirit if you’re not careful. You start to feel unseen, unheard, and undervalued. Yet, it’s in these moments that we learn one of life’s hardest and most empowering lessons: reciprocity matters.

In leadership and in love, energy should flow both ways. Mutual respect, effort, and appreciation are not luxuries; they are necessities. You can’t thrive in an environment where you’re constantly emptying yourself with no one refilling your cup.

So, if you find yourself in that space  remember this: walking away doesn’t mean you failed. It means you’ve finally chosen yourself. You’ve chosen balance, peace, and environments where your energy is matched and your worth is recognized.

Whether in love, career, or service  give, but don’t lose yourself in the process. You deserve relationships that refill your spirit, not drain it.

Leadership is not just about giving; it’s also about knowing when to stop pouring into what no longer grows you.
